Pompeii Ancient city of Campania, situated to the mouth of the river Sarno, few south kilometers of the Vesuvius, between Ercolano and Stabia. You/he/she was founded around 600 B.C. from the oscis and subsequently conquered by the sannitis (V century B.C.); involved in the wars sannitiche (343-290 B.C.), subsequently in the second war punica (218-201 B.C.), then in the social (90-89 B.C.) war, it was attached and won by Silla. In the 80 B.C. it became Roman colony and it reached a population of 20.000 inhabitants to the beginning of the Christian era. The city, to the center of a fertile lowland, it was an important commercial knot and it constituted the result on the sea for Nola and other cities of the hinterland. Seriously damaged by an earthquake in the 62 d.C., it was buried, with Ercolano and Stabia, in the 79 d.C. from an eruption of the Vesuvius.
Herculaneum, according to the legend narrated by the Dionigis of Alicarnasso, you/he/she was founded by Ercole in 1243 B.C.: with all probability instead you/he/she was founded or from Osci in the XII century B.C. as written by Strabone, or from the Etruschis among the X and the VIII century B.C. You/he/she was conquered by the Greek in 479 B.C. and subsequently it passed under the influence of the Sannitis, before being conquered by the Romans in the 89 B.C., following the social war, becoming a town hall. The city became therefore a residential place for the Roman aristocracy and he/she lived its period of maximum shine with the tribuno Mark Nonio Balbo, which embellished him and it had new buildings to build. Subsequently it was stricken from the 62 Pompeii earthquake and then completely buried under a blanket of mud and materials tall piroclastici from the ten to the twenty-five meters following the eruption of the Vesuvius of the 79 such layer, with to spend some years, he solidified, forming a plan of rock called pappamonte, similar to the tufo but more tender, that protected the rests of the city.Buried under a blanket of ashes, lapilli and mud during the 79 Vesuvius eruption, together with Pompeii, Stabiae and Oplonti.
Mount Vesuvius: In Italy there are quite a lot volcanos: some are active, that is they have enough regular eruptions in the years as the Etna and the Stromboli; others are quiescenti. In Italy, among the most important volcanos quiescenti, remembers particularly the Vesuvius, both because of this testimonies exist, still today visible, of a great eruption (many tourists go every year to visit the places in Pompeii and Ercolano, next to Naples, destroyed by this volcano) both because its summit is very particular. The history of the Vesuvius goes up again to epoch in which the eruptions were alternated to long periods of inactivity 35.000 years ago. The last eruption happened in 1944, but the most famous was that of the 79 d.C, that buried the cities of Pompeii and Ercolano.
